002 Kunstraum Potsdamer Straße
Die Intervention ist Teil eines gewonnenen Wettbewerbs zur Sanierung einer Parkhausfassade, welche Teil des Studentenwohnheims und der Kunstgalerie Kunstraum potsdamer Straße ist. Der architektonische Eingriff wird durch eine künstlerische Setzung ergänzt: Der durch Öffnungen und Bauteile fragmentierte Schriftzug verweist auf die hybride Nutzung des Gebäudes und verleiht dem Kunstraum Potsdamer Straße – trotz seiner versteckten Lage in zweiter Reihe – neue Sichtbarkeit im Stadtraum.
Die Lettern, in Arial Bold bei 1550 Punkt, sind gleichermaßen präsent wie zurückhaltend – ein grafisches Moment, das die Eigenlogik des Bestands aufgreift und fortschreibt. Die Umsetzung erfolgte situativ vor Ort: Übrig gebliebene Fassadenfarbe aus der Sanierung (Siko/RAL 7032) wurde mit grobkörnigem Bausand versetzt und appliziert. Die raue, sandfarbene Oberfläche sucht den Dialog mit Brandwänden, Putzflächen und den Materialitäten der Umgebung.
The intervention is part of a winning competition entry for the renovation of a parking garage façade, which forms part of both a student housing complex and the Kunstraum Potsdamer Straße art gallery. The architectural gesture is complemented by a graphic layer: a typographic element, fragmented by structural openings and building joints, refers to the building’s hybrid program and offers new visibility to the Kunstraum – despite its position set back from the street.
The letters, set in Arial Bold at 1550 pt, are both assertive and restrained – a graphic moment that continues the logic of the existing structure. The application was carried out on site in a process-oriented manner: leftover façade paint from the renovation (Siko/RAL 7032) was mixed with coarse construction sand and applied in an improvised technique. The resulting rough, sand-colored surface enters into dialogue with neighboring firewalls, rendered facades, and coarse textures.
